Pletikosa backs transfer rebel Modric

Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa is backing his compatriot Luka Modric in pushing for a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid.

Rostov s Pletikosa has said midfielder Modric is still focused on a dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu, despite Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and manager Andre Villas-Boas demanding a major fee for his release.

In a brief interview with AS on Tuesday, Pletikosa said: I m one of (Modric s) best friends and I think Luka is doing well. Last year, Levy promised he could leave for the same amount (40 million euros) if it was offered by Chelsea (but that didn t happen).

What s bigger than Madrid? That happens once in a lifetime. Luka knows this. With (Jose) Mourinho, he could win two of the next three Champions Leagues if Levy doesn t break his dream.

He would play phenomenally (well) where Xabi (Alonso) and (Sami) Khedira are.

Seriously, you will see. At Spurs he has been one of the best in the Premier League in that position. As well as that, he s a great guy and very smart.

Although Modric is holding out for a move to Real, he could be in Tottenham s squad to face Newcastle United in their English Premier League opener on Saturday.

Pletikosa, 33, spent the 2010/11 season on loan at Spurs from Spartak Moscow, but made just one appearance in the League Cup.
