Van Gaal has what it takes – Ferguson

Louis van Gaal has received the backing of Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson as the Dutchman seeks to emulate the former Old Trafford boss.

Ferguson won 38 trophies during his 27 years at the helm and retired in 2013 having built a reputation as one of the game s greatest managers.

He keeps a watchful eye over his former club and likes what he sees in Van Gaal, a former adversary in Champions League contests against Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Every manager is different anyway, Ferguson told Sky Sports.

We all have our different philosophies and beliefs. We have different ways of doing things, the way we pick teams and how we look at the qualities of players.

Louis has got a great background with Bayern Munich and Barcelona. He s got the…

Parkinson: Bring on Man United

Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson is convinced his team can beat any opposition after their FA Cup triumph over Sunderland.

Cup specialists Bradford City will not fear any opposition in the FA Cup sixth round with manager Phil Parkinson keen to take on Manchester United after dismissing Sunderland on Sunday.

League One s Bradford trumped Sunderland 2-0 at Valley Parade to add the Wearside club to their list of scalps that also includes Chelsea and Championship club Millwall.

In the 2012-13 Capital One Cup, Bradford knocked off Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Arsenal and Wigan on their way to the final where they lost to Swansea City, and Parkinson, who was also in charge then, believes his team can reach Wembley Stadium again.

If we get our approach…

Sanchez attracting interest and could leave Man United – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed there is interest in Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez, who is strongly linked with joining Serie A side Inter.

Sanchez has endured a miserable time at United since he joined from Arsenal in January 2018 in a deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Gunners.

He has scored four goals in 32 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, with his spell at Old Trafford heavily affected by various injuries.

Inter are reportedly keen to sign Sanchez on loan, which would allow the Chile international to reunite with his former United team-mate Romelu Lukaku.

While Solskjaer was unwilling to give firm details about the status of a potential move for Sanchez, he accepted the 30-year-old may depart before the European tr…

FIFA Confederations Cup venue hit by protests

Protests outside the venue for the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup have marred preparations for the tournament.

Around 200 people burned tyres and blocked the main road in front of the Brasilia stadium, venue for the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Japan on Saturday.

The protests are thought to have been sparked by a number of issues, including the cost of rebuilding the stadium in 2010 with that figure reported to be in the region of 450 million euros.

And more disorder has apparently been threatened during a fan fest for Saturday s curtain-raiser, unless demands are met for protesters to meet with the president of Terracap (Development Agency for the Federal District).

The scenes will be of concern for Brazil ahead of a competition tha…

Jol replaced by Meulensteen at Fulham

Fulham have parted company with manager Martin Jol and placed Rene Meulensteen in charge of first-team affairs.

Jol, who took the reins at Craven Cottage in June 2011, had been under increasing pressure after the club slipped into the Premier League relegation zone.

Saturday s 3-0 defeat to West Ham at Upton Park, which saw the visitors fail to muster a shot on target, represented the final straw for Fulham owner Shahid Khan and Jol s exit was confirmed on Sunday.

Meulensteen, who was appointed as Fulham’s first-team coach in November, will now take over.

Today (Sunday) I spoke with Martin to thank him for his efforts on behalf of Fulham Football Club over the past three seasons and, in particular, since my becoming chairman earlier this year, Khan said in a st…

Atletico Madrid 1 Arsenal 1 (Atletico win 3-1 on pens): Smith Rowe stars in Emery´s new-look side

Arsenal prospect Emile Smith Rowe scored a superb solo goal to earn his team a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the International Champions Cup as Unai Emery was treated to a showcase of the potential in his squad.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder impressed throughout the first of Arsenal s three pre-season friendlies in Singapore and showed just why he is one of the club s most talked-about young players when he scored from outside the box early in the second half.

The goal cancelled out Luciano Vietto s opener for Atletico, who were without the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez but nevertheless exposed Arsenal s defensive frailties on occasion and looked the better organised of the two teams.

Arsenal s young guns failed to fire in …

Loew opens Germany World Cup door for Kuranyi

Schalke manager Felix Magath revealed Sunday Germany boss Joachim Loew is back in contact with rebel striker Kevin Kuranyi, sparking speculation the hot-shot forward could earn a World Cup reprieve.

Kuranyi scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday which put them top of the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich and made the ex-Germany striker the league s joint top-scorer.

The 28-year-old has been exiled from the Germany squad since walking out in frustration 18 months ago, but Magath says Loew and Kuranyi are now back on speaking terms.

They spoke last week after, I believe, meeting each other by chance, Magath told German television channel DSF.

As a trainer, one must constantly reconsider your decisions and sometimes change them…

Germany boss Loew considering Kuranyi reprieve

Germany coach Joachim Loew admitted Thursday he is considering ending Kevin Kuranyi s exile from the national side and taking the striker to the World Cup.

Kuranyi, 28, turned his back on the Germany team in October 2008 out of frustration at being omitted from the matchday squad and although he later apologised, Loew later vowed never to select him again.

But with first-choice strikers Miroslav Klose of Bayern Munich and Cologne s Lukas Podolski both struggling for form, Kuranyi s 18 goals for Schalke 04 so far this season have put Loew under pressure to reconsider his opinion.

I am aware of my responsibility as the coach of the national team, but we cannot be influenced by the public pressure, said Loew on the German Football Federation (DFB) website.
